Ph.D. credit hour reduction
In October 2024, the Wayne State University Board of Governors approved to reduce the minimum credit hour requirement for the Ph.D. degree from 90 to 60. This is a two-part adjustment to minimum credit hours:
- Dissertation credits decrease from 30 to 18.
- Non-dissertation (curriculum) credits decrease from 60 to 42.
Note: Programs are not mandated to reduce their credit hours or change their curriculum, particularly those bound by accreditation.
Programs interested in reducing the minimum number of credits for their Ph.D. degree must submit a program revision request through CourseLeaf. For a step-by-step process, visit the program revision request page.
