New graduate programs and certificates prepare students for dynamic careers in growing fields

The Wayne State University Board of Governors has approved a number of new graduate programs, certificates and concentrations for the 2020-2021 academic year. These programs address shifts in market trends and take into account data on employment sectors, presenting students with opportunities to develop the expertise required for contemporary career paths. The additions include new AGRADE programs, which allow highly qualified undergraduates with an interest in attending graduate school to enroll in undergraduate and graduate programs simultaneously, allowing them to save time and money. Many programs include online courses, making them prime picks while social-distancing guidelines remain in place on campus.

All programs, certificates and concentrations will be available to students beginning in the fall 2020 semester.


Mike Ilitch School of Business

Master of Business Administration with concentrations in healthcare supply chain management and digital/business analytics

With the onset of coronavirus, healthcare supply chain management is a timely addition. The concentration provides an overview of medical device production, quality management, lean six sigma, healthcare purchasing, logistics, warehousing, hospital materials management and disaster preparedness.

In an increasing digitalized world, competencies in technical skills and data management are required. The concentration in digital/business analytics provides an overview of decision-making support, qualitative and quantitative analysis, applied technology and mobile delivery.

Available in September, pending final approval by the Graduate School.

Master of Science in Community Health

Public health is a community issue that requires community-based solutions. The program seeks to advance health equity and explores the social determinants that influence behavior and health. For those interested in being health educators in community settings, from nonprofit organizations to hospitals and health insurance companies.

Master of Science in Health and Physical Education Teaching

For certified teachers looking to add health and physical education teaching as endorsements to their Michigan teacher licensure.

Master of Science Exercise and Sport Science

Athletes know what makes their bodies sore, what brings their heart rates up, what makes them sweat, but knowing how to optimize their physical performance-that takes science. Undertraining leads to poor results, but overtraining can be dangerous, leading to prolonged fatigue, injury and slow recovery. Sports scientists help athletes find that peak balance. The curriculum compliments other graduate programs, including nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant, physical therapy, athletic training and medical school.


College of Engineering

Ph.D. Dual-Title in Civil Engineering and Urban Sustainability

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program in Civil and Environmental Engineering can apply to earn a dual-title in Urban Sustainability. Competencies are determined by the Transformative Research in Urban Sustainability Training (T-RUST) program, which integrates disciplines to tackle challenges in urban sustainability. T-RUST offers access to community leaders, industry experts, interdisciplinary research and fieldwork opportunities around the Metro Detroit area and beyond.

Master of Science in Computer Science with concentrations in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving

The announcement of these new concentrations arrives as the College of Engineering continues to increase its degree offerings focused on industrial automation, smart infrastructure, electrification and connectivity.

Master of Science in Environmental and Sustainability Engineering

If you want to help protect the natural resources of the Great Lakes Region and beyond, find sustainable solutions, and create the infrastructure to make it happen, this degree is for you. The curriculum is broken up into four themes: systems and resources, treatment and sensing technologies, bio-chemical-physical processes, and environmental exposure and risk.

Master of Science in Robotics with concentrations in industrial Automation, intelligent control and smart mobility

The industrial robot market is estimated to grow to $33.8 billion in the five years. From autonomous driving cars to evolutionary healthcare techniques and mobile assets, it's a booming and ever evolving industry. Three concentrations are available: industrial automation, intelligent control, and smart mobility. Between the College of Engineering's Robotics and Automation Lab, theCARES Lab and the Center for Advanced Mobility, there's no shortage of ways for students to dive in and get hands-on learning.


College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts

The programs enable highly qualified communication studies and public relations seniors to enroll simultaneously in undergraduate and graduate programs and to apply a maximum of 12 credits toward both degrees, reducing the time to the master's degree.


Law School

Master of Studies in Law with a concentration in human resources law

In the wake of COVID-19, employers and employees are facing changed work environments and HR consultants are playing a significant role in the shift. The M.S.L. is designed to help professionals understand law relevant to the HR field. Courses cover employment discrimination, labor law and practice, dispute resolution in employment, government organization, and employee benefits, among others.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Master of Arts in Geology (non-thesis option)

An M.A. provides a stepping stone for graduates to career advancement in the fields of environmental and geotechnical consulting. The program explores the relationship between the environment and earth science and prepares students to provide solutions to environmental problems.

Graduate Certificate in Health Care Ethics

Advances in healthcare technology bring countless benefits to public health, but they also bring added ethical obligations. The program teaches students the essentials of bioethical reasoning and practice as they relate to the domains of medicine, law and public policy. Online courses offered.

Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management

Wayne State launched the certificate to meet the growing demand for nonprofit management training and emerging challenges affecting the nonprofit sector of Southeast Michigan. Courses are taught by faculty from the political science department and faculty with expertise in nonprofit management. Most are taught online, making the program flexible and enabling students to complete the curriculum in as little as a single academic year.


School of Social Work

The School of Social Work has partnered with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to provide highly qualified undergraduate CLAS students with the opportunity to enroll in the master of social work program simultaneously.
