Five skills you'll learn through Wayne State's Professional Development Series

With weekly events scheduled for the winter semester, students and postdocs can gain an enormous amount of knowledge without spending a dime. All the events listed below are now open for registration. Here are five key skills that Wayne State's professional development events offer:

Interviewing

Are you currently job hunting? Looking for a career move? The interview process has become a complex situation to navigate, with interviews often happening over the phone, via Zoom, in-person, or a combination of all the above. Join the Graduate School and Career Services as they review interviewing best practices and how to prepare for that first impression with a potential employer.

Public speaking

One of the most common fears among working professionals is public speaking. However, it is also a necessary skill required for professional success. Dr. Anita Mixon from the Department of Communication will share best practices, tips, and tricks for speaking at in-person events as well as in online environments.

Resolving conflict

Conflicts between peers and even with mentors are some of the most common problems in professional settings, including higher ed. How do you resolve them or avoid them all together? Dr. Loraleigh Keashly from the Department of Communication and conflict resolution expert will teach about typical conflicts, their antecedents, consequences, and identify when avoidance may actually lead to greater conflict.

Securing your financial future

Why is your credit score important? What is the difference between the major credit cards? What’s an APR? When and how should you start preparing for retirement? Julie Hollinshead from the Mike Ilitch School of Business will answer these questions and more about how to build and maintain wealth.

Completing your Individual Development Plan

The Individual Development Plan (IDP) is a highly important tool to help you plan your future. It also helps bring you and your mentor together on your current needs, future endeavors, and to help you organize your plan of attack. Best practices will be applicable to all disciplines, both STEM and non-STEM trainees.
