Keena Neal chose graduate school because she wanted to inspire the next generation of media practitioners and study how the media shape our perceptions of reality, particularly how media shapes consumers’ perceptions of people of color. Inspired by positive experiences in the McNair and TRIO programs as an undergrad, Neal decided the SURGE program was a great opportunity to share what she knew and collaborate with other Warriors. You can find her walking her miniature pincher along the Detroit Riverwalk and grabbing a slice of Supino’s pizza after a morning at Eastern Market. Post-graduation, she sees herself obtaining a faculty position at an R1 institution, teaching journalism history related to identity and representation in the media and working with her local community to encourage other students who are underrepresented in academia to pursue higher education.
