Spotlight: Graduate Ambassador Ariel E. Seay-Howard

By Ariel Seay-Howard, Ph.D. student in communication

I originally went to school for culinary arts. After I received my culinary arts degree, I was accepted into Oakland University’s communication program. During this time, I felt it would be best for me to have a communication degree to complement my culinary arts background. I wanted to be a chef and event planner.

After being in the culinary field for a couple of years, not feeling fulfilled, and falling in love with the culture and race aspect of communication, I decided to study to become a communication professor. I knew that I needed to earn a master's degree before applying for a doctoral program, so I applied to Eastern Michigan's communication graduate program and was accepted.

I learned about the various kinds of communication and how I could apply it to my everyday interactions. I learned how different cultures communicate, multiple forms of listening techniques, and the symbolism of communication. Understanding all of these forms of communication solidified my goal of becoming a communication professor.

After earning a master’s from Eastern Michigan, I applied and was accepted into Wayne State’s communication doctoral program. I chose Wayne State because of its strong research track record, and I identified with the Warrior Strong motto. I have battled with imposter syndrome, anxiety, depression, and stress during the program and throughout my educational journey. However, I have had a strong and beautiful support system to help me through all of the trials I faced. I have also implemented self-care, and I have utilized the many resources Wayne State offers.

I believe it is important to give yourself permission to be kind to yourself. I make sure that I have a weekly workout routine, take breaks for myself, and find time to enjoy my friends and family. Earning a Ph.D. will give me the platform to help others learn how to communicate with people different from them. I also know that this degree will assist me with growing as a researcher, teacher, and activist and provide me with skills to increase my knowledge on race and violence while fighting against racial injustices.
