How to prep for a graduate open house

Thinking about pursuing a graduate degree to bolster your career prospects but don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered!

On July 14, 2021, the Wayne State University Graduate School is hosting a virtual Summer Master’s Programs Open House where you can learn how to create a stand-out application and hear from a panel of current students. Representatives from our most popular master’s programs will be there to answer all your questions.

If you have never attended a virtual open house or are thinking “Why Wayne State?” We spoke with a few advisors who will be in attendance on July 14 who offered up their tips and advice.

Melissa Sweda
Academic Advisor II, Mike Ilitch School of Business

Why should prospects pursue a business degree at Wayne State?

The Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State offers five master's programs with flexible completion options, online and in-person hybrid formats and expedited courses, most in an 11/4-week format.

Our full-service Career Planning and Placement Office supports students with their career management and knowledgeable graduate advisors are dedicated to assisting students toward degree completion. Students can apply for annual scholarships dedicated to business students and we offer the lowest tuition of all three major research universities in Michigan.

Why should they attend the Master’s Programs Open House?

It is always best to learn about a graduate business degree program in advance to ensure that it is a good fit for each student and to see how it can assist them with their career goals. By attending the Open House, students can gain valuable information on all our master's programs.

Anwar Najor-Durack, Ph.D., LMSW

Why should prospects pursue a social work degree at Wayne State?

Students wishing to pursue a M.S.W. degree will not find a better program than Wayne State to prepare them for professional practice. Through hands-on internship experiences in our urban home of Detroit, students are able to apply classroom knowledge to the community challenges and improve the quality of life of individuals, families, groups and communities.

Students partner with dedicated faculty who understand what is needed to serve clients, become licensed and begin professional practice. Our diverse student body is committed to making a difference in the lives of clients they serve and students are provided with ample opportunities to connect to one another and fellow Detroiters through research and volunteer opportunities.

What tips would you give to those who plan to attend the open house on how to prepare?

I would recommend folks take some time to look around on our website, particularly the M.S.W. program description and option to see if our program is a good fit for you. Below are other pages on our site that provide more details and support:

Rob Carlson
Graduate Program Coordinator, College of Engineering

Why should prospects pursue an engineering degree at Wayne State?

Wayne State University is Michigan's only urban research university and is known for academic and research excellence. With over 30 engineering graduate degree programs, the options for potential students are plentiful!

Located in the heart of Detroit, our engineering students will have the opportunity to learn from expert faculty and take advantage of the surrounding engineering industry throughout Metro Detroit.

What advice would you give to attendees on how to maximize their virtual open house experience?

Our intent is that the general information we provide during the event will answer many of the basic questions you may have. However, we realize attendees typically have questions that pertain to their specific situation. We encourage you to come prepared to ask those questions so you can leave the event with them answered.

Linda Jiménez, Ph.D.
Senior Lecturer and Program Coordinator, College of Education

Why should prospects pursue a degree in education at Wayne State?

Wayne State University is a premier academic and research institution that values our students’ experience. As an urban research university, the College of Education has long-standing partnerships with external stakeholders that we engage in the classroom.

Our tuition costs are lower than the other top research universities in Michigan and we provide a high-quality, active learning environment. In addition, students can decide to attend classes full-time or part-time based on their needs.

What next steps would you advise attendees of the open house to take after the event?

After the open house, you should schedule an individual meeting with an academic advisor from your program. Our faculty and staff are happy to support you and assist you with the application process. In addition, we can provide you additional resources that may not have been covered in the open house.
