Ambassador blog: How to excel in graduate school and beyond
By Graduate Ambassador Arifur Rahman, a Ph.D. candidate in pharmaceutical sciences
Success in research isn’t just about running experiments—it’s about perseverance, mentorship, and making the most of every opportunity.
As a Ph.D. candidate in pharmaceutical sciences at Wayne State University, I’ve been fortunate to receive multiple awards, including the Outstanding Research Award at the 21st Annual College Research Day, the Best Poster Presenter award at the Graduate Research Symposium, and several prestigious scholarships. But beyond the recognition, what truly matters are the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
Here are some key takeaways that can help you stand out in research and make the most of graduate school.
1. Find the right mentors
A strong mentor-mentee relationship can significantly impact your research trajectory and open doors to career advancement. One of the biggest factors in my success has been the mentorship of Dr. Zhengping Yi and Dr. Wanqing Liu. Their guidance has shaped my research, helped me navigate challenges, and pushed me to aim higher. A great mentor provides not only expertise but also encouragement when things don’t go as planned. My advice: seek mentors who genuinely invest in your growth, and don’t hesitate to ask for guidance.
2. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities
Research is rarely a straight path—experiments fail, hypotheses need adjusting, and progress can feel slow. I’ve had my fair share of setbacks, but I’ve learned that resilience is key. Instead of seeing failures as roadblocks, view them as steppingstones to improvement. Every challenge is an opportunity to refine your skills and think critically. The ability to adapt and learn from obstacles will make you a more innovative and persistent researcher.
3. Collaborate and build a strong network
Success in research doesn’t happen in isolation. Collaborating with colleagues, exchanging ideas, and receiving feedback have been invaluable in shaping my work. Graduate school is the perfect place to build a network with your peers, attend conferences, and participate in discussions. Your network can open doors to new opportunities and insights. Additionally, interdisciplinary collaborations can introduce fresh perspectives that enrich your research and lead to groundbreaking discoveries.
4. Take initiative and stay curious
While guidance from mentors is important, taking ownership of your research journey is equally critical. Ask questions, explore new methodologies, and take initiative in your projects. The most successful researchers aren’t just those who follow instructions but those who actively seek to expand their knowledge. Curiosity drives innovation, and being proactive in your learning will set you apart from others in your field.
5. Get involved beyond the lab
Your graduate school experience isn’t just about research. I’ve been honored with the EACPHS Dean’s Endowed Recruitment Scholarship for my contributions to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) and the Frank O. Taylor Pharmacy Scholarship for academic excellence. Engaging in leadership roles, volunteering, and contributing to the academic community not only enriches your experience but also makes you a well-rounded scholar. Becoming involved in outreach programs, student organizations, and professional societies can provide essential soft skills, broaden your perspective, and increase your impact.
6. Communicate your work effectively
Presenting research is just as important as conducting it. Winning awards like the Best Poster Presenter at the Graduate Research Symposium taught me the value of clear, compelling communication. Whether through presentations, publications, or networking, being able to convey your research impactfully will set you apart. Sharpening your writing and speaking skills can make a lasting impression on academic committees, funding agencies, and potential employers.
7. Celebrate milestones, big and small
The research journey is long, and it’s easy to get caught up in the next goal. Take time to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Each milestone-whether it’s publishing a paper, winning an award, or mastering a new technique, is a testament to your hard work and dedication. Acknowledging progress helps maintain motivation and provides a sense of fulfillment throughout your academic career.
Final thoughts
Graduate school is challenging, but with the right mindset, mentorship, and perseverance, you can make the most of it. Surround yourself with supportive mentors and peers, embrace challenges, and actively seek out opportunities to grow. The road to success may not always be smooth, but the lessons you learn along the way will shape you into a stronger researcher and professional.
If you’re just starting your research journey, remember this: work hard, stay curious, and never underestimate the power of a great mentor. With determination and the right support, you can achieve incredible things.
