AR/IDP instructions for faculty mentors

Annual Review/Individual Development Plan

Updated version coming soon

Annual Review/Individual Development Plans (AR/IDPs) are documents designed to support doctoral students and postdoctoral trainees in developing career plans and trajectories. The AR/IDP provides a structure to identify concrete steps towards long-term goals and a framework for constructive conversation between students and their mentors/advisors.

For Ph.D. students, the AR/IDP is a companion to the Plan of Work, which focuses on academic coursework and program milestones.

Because of the importance of an AR/IDP in a trainee's career development and recent mandates from federal agencies, an annual AR/IDP is required for all doctoral students and postdoctoral trainees regardless of funding status.

How to approve an AR/Individual Development Plan:

  • Ph.D. students use an electronic submission form to file their AR/IDPs via Academica. Once they have completed the IDP submission, the advisor will receive an email notification. The student's AR/IDP will also appear in the advisor's workflow worklist, which can be searched for in the search bar or found by clicking the faculty tab once in Academica.
  • Once the AR/IDP is approved by the advisor, the graduate director will receive an email notification and the AR/IDP will appear in the graduate director's workflow worklist for the final approval.
  • All AR/Ph.D. students and postdoctoral trainees are required to submit an AR/IDP by the end of their first year and update annually.
